Ultimate 30-Day Costa Rica Road Trip Itinerary

Plan the perfect 30-day Costa Rica campervan itinerary, from Arenal Volcano to both coasts and the Osa Peninsula. Ideal for self-drive and 4×4 adventures.

Costa Rica packs volcanoes, cloud forests, and two very different coastlines into one small country and there’s no better way to experience all of it than behind the wheel of your own campervan or 4×4.

This 30-day Costa Rica road trip itinerary takes you on a full loop of the country’s most iconic landscapes, at a relaxed pace that leaves room for spontaneous stops, sunset swims, and slow mornings with coffee in hand.

From Volcanoes to Rainforest

The journey begins in Alajuela and heads straight for the Arenal Volcano area, where lava trails, waterfalls, and natural hot springs set the tone for the adventure ahead.

From there, the route winds north to the turquoise waters of Río Celeste and the dry, sun-soaked landscapes of Rincón de la Vieja before dropping into Guanacaste’s beach towns. Tamarindo, Playa Conchal, and Sámara for surf, snorkeling, and golden-hour walks along the sand.

Nicoya Peninsula to the Cloud Forest

Crossing into Santa Teresa and Mal País delivers some of the country’s most laid-back surf culture, while the climb up to Monteverde swaps beach heat for misty cloud forest trails, hanging bridges, and night walks in search of nocturnal wildlife.

The descent to the Central Pacific brings travelers to Manuel Antonio National Park, one of Costa Rica’s most biodiverse and most photographed protected areas.

The Wild South and the Caribbean

Heading further south, the itinerary reaches Uvita and the Osa Peninsula, home to Corcovado National Park and a boat tour to Isla del Caño for world-class snorkeling.

After climbing back through the highlands via Cerro de la Muerte and the Orosí Valley, the route crosses to the Caribbean coast, ending with days in Tortuguero’s jungle canals, Puerto Viejo’s beaches, and a visit to the Jaguar Rescue Center before the final drive back to San José and Alajuela.

Why Travel by Campervan

A campervan or 4×4 rental is the ideal way to cover this route, since many of Costa Rica’s best beaches and waterfalls sit down unpaved roads that reward flexible, independent travel. With a campervan, there’s no need to lock in fixed hotel bookings, travelers can linger an extra day at a favorite beach or wake up to a sunrise over Lake Arenal.
